Saturation throughput analysis of error-prone 802.11 wireless networks

چکیده
It is well known that the medium access control (MAC) layer is the main bottleneck for the IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs. Much work has been done on performance analysis of the 802.11 MAC. However, most of them assume that the wireless channel is error-free. In this paper, we investigate the saturation throughput performance achieved at the MAC layer, in both congested and errorprone channels. We provide a simple and accurate analytical model to calculate the MAC throughput. The model is validated through extensive simulation results. Our results show that channel errors have a significant impact on the system performance.

Linear Approximation Model Throughput Performance Analysis of IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordinated Function in Wireless Lossy Channel
One source of performance degradation in wireless networks is the frame error that occurs because of nonideal channel conditions. Most previous works assume an ideal transmission channel (i.e., no error in transmission), whereas other works assume that the error is constant and exists only in data packets. These previous works do not consider transmission errors in control frames (i.e., RTS, CT...

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...
متن کاملOn Improving Performance for IEEE 802.11 Wireless LANs under Congested and Error-Prone Environments
IEEE 802.11 is worldwide implemented and the most widely deployed protocol for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). This paper proposes a simple and effective contention window-resetting scheme, named Double Increment Double Decrement (DIDD), to improve the performance of IEEE 802.11 Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) under an error-prone environment. Our work becomes important and meaningful in...
متن کاملOptimal Packet Size for Network Throughput with Time-Bound Fairness in IEEE 802.11 Networks
With the popularity of IEEE 802.11 networks, it has become increasingly important to analyze the performance of IEEE 802.11 protocols more accurately. The IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) protocol exhibits fairness problem in scenarios with asymmetric topology. Existing strategies mostly aim at the fairness issue without considering the convergence time to achieve fairness. H...
